Bin Bypass had developed an innovative recycling collection bin attachment unit loved by Councils and the recycling industry, however, to scale up they needed quality data to prove the impact of their system. This is where Genesys stepped in with a customised Wireless Sensing Platform solution. Integrating the Genesys sensing platform into the recycling units helped the early-stage startup save significant time by eliminating the need to undertake lengthy and inaccurate manual bin surveys. It also enabled the team to achieve a rapid 4-month development schedule, which was a key deadline for their funding partnership with the Queensland Government. With the new ‘smart units’ Bin Bypass is now poised to expand its impact across Australia, supporting the diversion of bottles and cans from landfill and giving micro collectors utilising container deposit schemes dignity in the critical role they play collecting these items from public areas.

Getting to this outcome: the problems to solve

To get this outcome, there were a number of technical challenges that were overcome during the product development. In addition to solving for tracking, the assembly of the new system proved to be a time-consuming process that required meticulous care, highlighting the need for a more efficient assembly method for future designs. In addition, unexpected errors occurred during the initialisation of the dynamic file system, requiring improved error handling and a better-defined software architecture to streamline development.

Solution: Harnessing IoT for Smart Recycling

To address these challenges, the Genesys Wireless Sensing Platform integrated into their recycling units involved incorporating six Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors into each unit, enabling accurate detection and tracking of container deposits and withdrawals. The system was designed to be mounted on existing street infrastructure, enhancing public accessibility. Rigorous testing was conducted under various conditions to ensure reliability and performance, leading to the successful completion of a prototype within four months.

Benefits: Driving Sustainable Innovation

The integration of IoT sensor technology into Bin Bypass’s recycling units provided significant benefits, including enhanced tracking of container deposits and withdrawals. This capability allowed for valuable insights into recycling activities, facilitating better management and operational optimisation. The successful field-testing phase demonstrated the system’s reliability, showcasing its potential to significantly improve recycling efficiency. By leveraging advanced sensing technology, Bin Bypass was able to enhance their container collection system, aligning with their mission to reduce landfill waste and improve recycling efforts. Overall, this collaboration highlights the transformative impact of innovative IoT solutions in advancing environmental sustainability.

I couldn’t have asked for more from Genesys.

They helped me transform my recycling units into smart devices on time and within a very tight budget while providing invaluable support every step of the way. As a result, we’ve created a product that strengthens Bin Bypass' ability to prove its efficacy to clients and unlocks new, far more consistent revenue streams. This transformation is shifting us from a startup to a viable business while contributing to the green economy and benefiting those who collect containers in the public realm.

On a personal level, I have walked away with valuable technical skills and knowledge that will continue to benefit our business long term and well beyond this initial product launch partnership with Genesys.
